WFR Recertification Course (WRC)

The 24-hour WRC refreshes a current WFR with new research in wilderness medicine based on the Wilderness Medical Society Clinical Practice Guidelines and updated industry-standard guidelines set forth by the Wilderness Education Medicine Collaborative (WMEC). Course participants will review foundational knowledge and apply newly learned skills and guidelines via hands-on scenarios and simulations.

We offer our Wilderness First Responder Recertification Course (WRC) in 3-Day and Hybrid 2-Day formats. Our Hybrid WRC format meets the WMEC’s minimum requirement of 16 hours delivered in person and is devoted to hands-on, practical skills and simulations. The learning outcomes of the traditional and hybrid course formats are the same.

Hybrid Wilderness First Recertification Course (WRC)

The Hybrid WRC format offers 8 hours of self-paced, online instruction followed by two consecutive days in the classroom. The online component is hosted on CANVAS®, a cloud-based classroom and powerful learning management system that allows individual students to work at a personalized pace. The online material consists of reading assignments, case studies, videos, photos, animations, quizzes, and a midterm exam and is available approximately 1 month before the in-person classroom section.

The hybrid format works best for self-motivated individuals with good time management skills that have access to a smart phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop, and high-speed internet. This instructional format provides opportunities for course participants to learn at their own speed, during their most convenient times, in their own space.

During the classroom section, course participants integrate their knowledge via drills, skill stations, scenarios, simulations, and discussions with the same instructor team that support them during the online component.

Registration for the Hybrid WRC includes both the online and classroom sections. In the event that an individual is unable to meet in-person, or a classroom section is canceled, course participants have the flexibility to transfer to another 2-day classroom section as long as it is within 1-year of completing the online component.

Traditional Wilderness First Recertification

The traditional WRC format offers in-person instruction in a classroom-style setting over 3 days. Course participants quickly integrate into the WRC curriculum with a balance of lecture and hands-on learning. The days are full of targeted lectures, skills stations, scenarios, drills, simulations, and discussions. The intensity of this course allows for camaraderie and strong teamwork to develop quickly throughout the group. In turn, this simulates the dynamics of a true backcountry expedition and reveals how individual group members would utilize their knowledge and skills in the event of an emergency.
