Wilderness First Responder Refresher Course (WRC)

This course is designed to refresh a current WFR from a or WAFA with new updates in wilderness medicine assessments and treatments based on best practices and new research, as well as updated industry standard protocols. This course prioritizes the review of foundational skills, new skills and field guidelines through hands-on scenarios, and simulations.

Did you obtain your last training from a wilderness medicine education provider other than Desert Mountain Medicine, and have questions about the refresher? Click here

We offer our WFR course in two different formats. The learning outcomes of both WFR curriculum delivery methods are the same.

Hybrid Wilderness First Responder Refresher (WRC)

The Hybrid WRC format offers 8 hours of self-paced, online instruction followed by two consecutive days in the classroom. The online component is hosted on CANVAS®, a cloud-based classroom and powerful learning management system that allows individual students to work at a personalized pace. The online material consists of reading assignments, case studies, videos, photos, animations, quizzes, and a midterm exam and is available approximately 1 month before the in-person classroom section.

The hybrid format works best for self-motivated individuals with good time management skills that have access to a smart phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop, and high-speed internet. This instructional format provides opportunities for course participants to learn at their own speed, during their most convenient times, in their own space.

During the classroom section, course participants integrate their knowledge via drills, skill stations, scenarios, simulations, and discussions with the same instructor team that support them during the online component.

Important Information in Regards to the Coronavirus Pandemic:

Registration for the Hybrid WRC includes both the online and classroom sections. In the event that an individual is unable to meet in-person, or a classroom section is canceled, course participants have the flexibility to transfer to another 2-day classroom section as long as it is within 1-year of completing the online component. In addition to our COVID-19 Safety Guidelines we will deliver our course curriculum outdoors when we meet in-person.

Hours: 24

Length: Self-paced online component + 2 days

Training: WRC, WAT, CPR

Prerequisite: Current WFR, WFR Refresher or AWFA/WAFA completion

Traditional Wilderness First Responder Refresher

(WRC)

The traditional WRC format offers in-person instruction in a classroom-style setting over 3 days. Course participants quickly integrate into the WRC curriculum with a balance of lecture and hands-on learning. The days are full of targeted lectures, skills stations, scenarios, drills, simulations, and discussions. The intensity of this course allows for camaraderie and strong teamwork to develop quickly throughout the group. In turn, this simulates the dynamics of a true backcountry expedition and reveals how individual group members would utilize their knowledge and skills in the event of an emergency.
