Wilderness EMS Recertification

The Wilderness EMS Recertification (WEMS-R) course will review the latest evidence-based science and best practices in wilderness EMS and remote medicine. WEMS-R course participants will review foundational knowledge and apply newly learned skills and guidelines via hands-on scenarios and simulations. Topics include: assessment and management of multi-systems trauma patients, pain management, a review of complex environmental medicine case studies, the assessment and management of mental health challenges in the field, and tips and tricks when faced with extended patient care. Our WEMS-R course is offered in a 2-day format and meets the WMEC's minimum requirement of 16 hours delivered in person, devoted to hands-on, practical skills and simulations.

Registration Information

You must have a valid EMT/NREMT- Basic or higher and a WEMS (W-Upgrade) certification to register for this course. 

Course Location

This class will be held completely outdoors at Horsethief Group Site A located approximately 25 minutes from Moab. See the logistic document in your student dashboard for detailed information.

Camping is not included. Book a campground at Registration.gov There is plenty of dispersed camping on Horsethief Mesa.

Planning Your Trip

From Horsethief Campground, there are multiple options for mountain & road biking, hiking, scenic tours, four-wheeling and photography. The area has many mountian bike trails and four-wheel drive roads leading to canyons and vistas. Nearby Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park have many scenic overlooks and trails for hiking, biking and exploring.

Nearby Attractions

Arches and Canyonlands National Parks as well as Dead Horse Point State Park are within a 15-minute drive. Groups heading into Canyonlands to ride the White Rim trail often use this site for camping before and after their trip. Horsethief Campground is also near the Gemini Bridges Road and the Mineral Bottom Boat Ramp.
